About this imagery

This page displays satellite imagery acquired by NASA's Earth-observing satellites, made available through the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) platform. Images are updated daily, typically with a one-day delay from acquisition.

Visible mode shows true-colour imagery captured in reflected sunlight by the VIIRS instrument aboard the Suomi NPP satellite. Cloud formations, snow cover and vegetation patterns appear in natural tones. Imagery is only available during daylight passes over Syldavia.

Infrared mode uses a near-infrared composite (bands 7-2-1) from the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite. This reveals detail not visible to the naked eye — cloud structure, moisture patterns and land surface characteristics stand out more clearly than in natural colour.

Once the HVEGHI-1 meteorological satellite programme reaches operational status, this page will transition to imagery from the Observatory's own instrument suite.
